There’s no living with a nuclear-armed North Korea. North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un’s paranoid megalomania drove him to develop nuclear missiles while his nation ate grass. Almost certainly, he will not denuclearize peacefully.
But what little hope there might have been for peaceful denuclearization has been betrayed by a Democratic Party already surrendering to Kim Jong-un.
Democratic national security experts, including Susan Rice, President Obama’s National Security Advisor, former Director of National Intelligence, Gen. James Clapper, and many others declare we must learn to live with a nuclear-armed North Korea, and accept a Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) relationship with Kim Jong-un.
MAD kept the peace during the Cold War with the USSR, and will work with North Korea too, or so they reason. Joel Mathis in The Week recently re-articulated the view of liberal journalists and the Democratic Party:
“For more than a generation, American policy toward North Korea has been aimed mostly at keeping that country from obtaining or keeping a nuclear arsenal. That mission failed in 2006, and American presidents have been scrambling ever since to obtain denuclearization. That goal has never been achieved, and there is no reason to believe it ever will be.”
Mr. Mathis, who describes himself as no fan of President Trump, praises the president’s performance at the Hanoi nuclear summit, which he interprets as manifesting a decision “to live with the weapons, pursue peace, and find a way to declare victory anyway even if he still talks about denuclearization” of North Korea.

핵무장한 북한과 함께 사는 것은 안 된다. 북한 주민들이 풀을 먹는 동안 독재자 김정은이 핵미사일을 개발하도록 부추긴 것은 편집증적인 과대망상이었다. 그가 평화롭게 비핵화하지 않을 것임은 거의 틀림없다.

오바마 대통령의 국가안보보좌관이었던 수전 라이스와 국가정보국장을 지낸 제임스 클래퍼 장군을 포함한 민주당의 국가안보 전문가들 및 다수의 전문가들은 미국이 핵무장한 북한과 더불어 사는 것을 배우고 김정은과의 상호파괴보장 관계를 받아들여야 한다고 선언한다.
민주당과 진보파 안보전문가들은 상호파괴보장 정책이 냉전 시대에 미국과 소련 간의 평화를 유지했고, 이 정책은 북한에도 통할 것이라는 논리를 편다. 더 위크의 조엘 매티스는 진보파 언론인들과 민주당의 그런 견해를 최근에 다시 분명히 밝혔다.
“한 세대 이상 미국의 대북 정책은 북한이 핵무기를 확보하거나 보유하는 것을 막는 목표에 대부분 주력해 왔다. 그 임무는 2006년에 실패했고, 그 이후 미국의 여러 대통령은 비핵화를 달성하기 위해 서둘렀다. 북한을 비핵화한다는 목표는 결코 이루어지지 못했고, 앞으로 달성될 것이라고 믿을 이유가 없다.”
자신은 트럼프 대통령을 지지하지 않는다고 설명하는 매티스는 북·미 하노이 정상회담 때 트럼프 대통령이 취한 행동에 찬사를 보낸다. 그는 당시 대통령의 조치가 “핵무기와 더불어 살면서 평화를 추구하고, 여전히 북한의 비핵화에 관한 발언을 하면서도 어쨌든 승리했다고 선언하는 방법을 찾았다”는 결정을 나타낸 것이라고 해석했다.
