Liberal fascism, as my friend Jonah Goldberg has aptly pointed out in his book of the same title, is the “collaboration of government, church, unions and interest groups to expand government. It is simply the liberal impulse for controlling the lives of others.” It is the religion of the left.
Ironically, the left intelligentsia that is accusing Mr. Trump of fascism, are many of the same people in Hollywood who just made a movie celebrating the communists/fascists of the 1950s within their ranks - and portraying them sympathetically as blackballed victims, rather than subversive supporters of butchers who killed millions of Jews, blacks, gays, Christians, and dissidents.
So what really is fascism? The left simplistically has redefined the term to mean it is when massive numbers of voters support a conservative cause supported by the right and opposed by the left. If you oppose racial quotas, you are a fascist. If you support traditional marriage, you are a fascist. If you want to cut welfare benefits, you are a fascist. If you support Donald Trump, you are a fascist. By this definition liberals can’t be fascists because they are on a righteous cause.
But the real definition of a fascist is a leader who wants to use governmental power to suppress rights of individuals. It is the partnership of government and private industry for the collective good. Corporate cronyism is a classic form of fascism, which would include programs like Export Import Bank.
Fascism, communism, socialism, Naziism, progressivism, are all just variations on this same theme. These isms all feed on subjugating freedom.
The left might want to engage in some introspection and ask why so many millions of Americans - many of whom enthusiastically voted for Obama - now agree with Mr. Trump. Are these suddenly terrible people? Have they been duped by a charismatic leader? More likely the answer is that an ever-shrinking number of Americans trust Mr. Obama to keep the dangerous Muslims out. People want above all right now to keep their families safe, and since Mr. Obama has no interest in real and effective terrorist screening, many Americans say that it is best to keep them all out for now.
파시즘의 진정한 의미를 왜곡하는 좌익

필자의 친구 조나 골드버그가 동명의 자기 저서에서 적절하게 지적한 바와 같이 진보적 파시즘은 “정부, 교회, 노조, 이익집단이 정부를 확대하기 위한 협력이다. 그것은 단지 다른 사람들의 삶을 통제하려는 진보파의 충동이다.” 파시즘은 좌익의 종교다.
트럼프가 파시즘을 신봉한다고 비난하는 좌익 지식인들의 다수가 1950년대에 자기네 반열에 속했던 공산주의자들과 파시스트들을 기리는 영화를 얼마 전에 만든 할리우드 사람들과 같은 사람들이란 사실은 역설적이다. 그들은 당시의 공산주의자 겸 파시스트들을, 수백만 명의 유대인들과 흑인들 및 남자 동성애자들과 기독교인들 그리고 반체제인사들을 살해한 도살자들을 지지한 사회 파괴자들이 아니라 배척을 당한 희생자들로 동정적인 묘사를 한다.
그렇다면 파시즘은 실제로 무엇인가. 우익은 지지했으나 좌익은 반대한 보수주의적인 명분을 막대한 수의 유권자들이 지지하는 상황을 의미하기 위해서 좌익이 용어의 개념을 극단적으로 단순화하여 재규정했다. 만약 당신이 인종 할당제도에 반대할 경우 당신은 파시스트다. 만약 당신이 전통 결혼을 지지하면 당신은 파시스트다. 당신이 복지 혜택 삭감을 원하면 당신은 파시스트다. 당신이 도널드 트럼프를 지지하면 당신은 파시스트다. 진보주의자들은 옳고 당연한 명분 편에 서 있기 때문에 이런 개념 규정에 의해서 파시스트가 될 수 없다.
그러나 파시스트의 진정한 개념은 개인의 권리를 억압하기 위해 정부 권력의 사용을 원하는 지도자다. 그것은 정부와 민간산업의 동반관계다. 기업 정실주의는 파시즘의 전형적 형태인데 여기에는 수출입은행 같은 프로그램이 포함된다.
파시즘, 공산주의, 사회주의, 나치주의, 진보주의는 모두 이 동일한 주제의 변형에 불과하다. 이런 사상들은 모두 자유의 통제를 먹이로 삼는다.
좌익은 약간의 자기 성찰에 들어가 지금 그토록 많은 미국인들(다수는 오바마에게 열광적으로 투표했다)이 트럼프의 견해에 동의하는 이유가 무엇인지 묻는다. 이 사람들이 갑자기 형편없는 인간들이 되었을까. 그들이 카리스마를 지닌 한 지도자에게 속은 것일까. 오바마가 위험한 무슬림들을 입국시키지 않을 것으로 믿는 미국인들의 수가 점점 줄어들고 있다는 것이 보다 가능성 높은 답변일 것이다. 사람들은 지금 당장 자기 가족을 안전하게 지키는 것을 무엇보다 원하며 오바마가 테러분자를 가려내는 효과적이고 진정한 절차에 관심이 없기 때문에 많은 미국인들은 지금은 그들 모두를 입국시키지 않는 것이 최선이라고 말한다.
